چکیده

Conditional tests like two-sample permutation tests establish valid nite sample tests for large classes of nonparametric composite null hypotheses. In particular, we discuss the quality of various conditional distribution free tests in comparison to a (parametric) benchmark test. It is shown that they are often asymptotically e ective. This means that conditional tests are asymptotically equivalent to benchmark tests and do not loose asymptotic power under contiguous alternatives. Moreover they turn out to be asymptotically e cient for various models. The results apply to permutation tests, symmetry tests and tests based on U -statistics or maximum likelihood estimators. A counterexample for the Bootstrap shows that the principle is not always applicable for arbitrary resampling tests.

Counterfactual Analysis in Macroeconometrics: An Empirical Investigation into the E¤ects of Quantitative Easing

The policy innovations that followed the recent Great Recession, such as unconventional monetary policies, prompted renewed interest in the question of how to measure the e¤ectiveness of such policy interventions. To test policy e¤ectiveness requires a model to construct a counterfactual for the outcome variable in the absence of the policy intervention and a way to determine whether the di¤ere...

A Conditional Randomization Test to Account for Covariate Imbalance in Randomized Experiments

We consider the conditional randomization test as a way to account for covariate imbalance in randomized experiments. The test accounts for covariate imbalance by comparing the observed test statistic to the null distribution of the test statistic conditional on the observed covariate imbalance. We prove that the conditional randomization test has the correct significance level and introduce or...

Testing with Many Weak Instruments

This paper establishes the asymptotic distributions of the likelihood ratio (LR), Anderson-Rubin (AR), and Lagrange multiplier (LM) test statistics under “many weak IV asymptotics.” These asymptotics are relevant when the number of IVs is large and the coefficients on the IVs are relatively small. The asymptotic results hold under the null and under suitable alternatives. Hence, power compariso...

Markov chain order estimation with parametric significance tests of conditional mutual information

Besides the different approaches suggested in the literature, accurate estimation of the order of a Markov chain from a given symbol sequence is an open issue, especially when the order is moderately large. Here, parametric significance tests of conditional mutual information (CMI) of increasing order m, Ic(m), on a symbol sequence are conducted for increasing orders m in order to estimate the ...

Tests of Policy Ine¤ectiveness in Macroeconometrics

This paper proposes tests of policy ine¤ectiveness in the context of macroeconometric rational expectations models. It is assumed that there is a policy intervention that takes the form of changes in the parameters of a policy rule, and that there are su¢ cient observations before and after the intervention. The test is based on the di¤erence between the realisations of the outcome variable of ...
